Lunch by the Atlantic

View 2007 California & France on alexchan's travel map.

For some reason, I associate the Atlantic with cold bleak weather. But the Atlantic coast town of La Rochelle [La-Rochelle-travel-guide-1313568] was a scorcher.

La Rochelle's main feature is the "Vieux Port" ("Old Harbour"), which is at the heart of the city, picturesque and lined with seafood restaurants.

Lucky we managed to find a table under an umbrella in the restaurant.

The town was very prosperous historically when it was a busy port serving trade routes to Canada and the Antilles.

Dark Past

View 2007 California & France on alexchan's travel map.

This city in the Loire valley has a dark history ... it was the slave trade capital in France and the hub of human trafficing from Africa to the new continent. But good on them for not sweeping this under the carpet.

The nice chateau forms the heart of the city and like most French cities it is rather pretty.

Lunch in Dinan

Dinan is a pretty town in Brittany [Brittany-travel-guide-1314451] that is split in two ... one half is along a river while the other is on the hilltop. Nice little lunch stop and a walk.

The Mont

View 2007 California & France on alexchan's travel map.

Aaah! The famous fortified monastery built on a rock in Normandy [Normandy-travel-guide-1313157]. Before modernisation, it could only be accessed during low tide.

But now, hordes of tourist descend upon it (or maybe ascend) at all times ... grossly over-touristed for my tastes with shops, cafes etc. But still pretty.

What you see today is a mix of buildings dating from the 11th Century to the 20th.

Accommodation Crisis

View 2007 California & France on alexchan's travel map.

We thought we'd stop for the night close to Mont St Michel. Avranches seemed near enough but not too near (in case the accommodation situation was tight).

We were told at one hotel that at this time of year, to "just forget it" unless we backtracked considerably! Being optimists we drove around and followed a homestay sign (which seemd to lead us in circles) and managed to find something. Phew!
